Marcus Dupree, right, and his brother, Reggie, on the front porch of their house in Philadelphia, Mississippi in January 1983. Dupree was a very talented high school football player. My father wrote The Courting of Marcus Dupree, published in the fall of 1983, about the efforts to recruit him for college. Marcus played a year and a few games at the University of Oklahoma and then signed with the New Orleans Breakers of the ill-fated USFL. He suffered a knee injury and retired at the age of 23. After a brief comeback in the early 90s, he returned to Mississippi and is driving a truck. Marcus is the subject of an exquisite new documentary by Jonathan Hock entitled "The Best That Never Was." It will be playing on ESPN periodically over the next few months. Do NOT miss it.
