Dean Faulker Wells passed away suddenly in Oxford, Mississippi July 27. She was the last of the Faulkners. Her father, Dean Swift Faulkner, was killed in a plane crash before she was born in 1936. She was raised by her uncle, WIlliam Faulkner. Dean and her husband, Larry Wells, were instrumental in getting my father to return to Mississippi as writer-in-residence at Ole Miss in 1980. Their imprint, the Yoknapatawpha Press, also published a number of his books. It was an old fashioned Southern wake, with friends and family gathering at the old Faulkner home on South Lamar Avenue, two blocks from the court house square. A kind and gentle spirit with a very distinct raspy voice, Deanie was much beloved and will be greatly missed by all. She was buried in St. Peter's cmemetery just over one hill from her uncle, and another hill from her parents. Love you Deanie!
