Crews from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers remove "needles" to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway in Norco, Louisiana January 10, 2016. The Spillway, upriver from New Orleans, was opened to relieve high water on the Mississippi River and divert it to near by Lake Ponchartrain. The Mississippi River is expected to crest at flood stage at 17 feet in New Orleans on January 12. It is only the 11th time the Spillway has been opened since it was completed in 1931.
