A house washed awway by flood waters in the Lower Ninth Ward as it appeared as 10:42 a.m. on December 1, 2005. It was the first day that the entire neighborhood was opened to residents to return to "Look and Leave."

The same scene one year later at 10:42 a.m. on December 1, 2006. As with the rest of the city, progress is slow. There has been a lot of clean up, but there are still vast sections of neighborhoods, from the Lower Ninth to Gentilly that remain largely deserted. But there is some immediate hope: the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season ended November 30.
